Nearly every failure this research describes had a name before it had a chatbot. In 1997 Raja Parasuraman and Victor Riley separated the ways people and organisations go wrong with automation into four words, and the separation still does work that newer vocabulary does not, because three of the four belong to the operator and one belongs to whoever installed the system.
The answer, in one line

Definition#
Misuse, disuse and abuse: the three failure modes in Raja Parasuraman and Victor Riley's 1997 taxonomy of automation, being over-reliance by the operator, neglect of a capable system, and deployment without regard for the consequences for human performance. The fourth term, use, is the neutral case of switching a system on or off.
The four words, as the authors set them down#
Their own sentences are short enough to quote whole, and quoting them avoids the drift that has attached to two of the terms since.
- Use. "Use refers to the voluntary activation or disengagement of automation by human operators." They add that trust, mental workload and risk all bear on it, and that individual differences are large enough to make prediction difficult.
- Misuse. "Misuse refers to over reliance on automation, which can result in failures of monitoring or decision biases." The factors they name are workload, how reliable and how consistent the automation is, and how visible its current state is to the person supervising it.
- Disuse. "Disuse, or the neglect or underutilization of automation, is commonly caused by alarms that activate falsely." Their diagnosis of the cause is statistical: the base rate of the thing being detected is not considered when the trade-off between false alarms and misses is set.
- Abuse. "Automation abuse, or the automation of functions by designers and implementation by managers without due regard for the consequences for human performance, tends to define the operator's roles as by-products of the automation."
Where each one turns up now#
Misuse is the family. Automation bias is the decision half of it and automation complacency the monitoring half, and both were measured after this paper named the category they sit in.
Disuse is algorithm aversion arriving from the human-factors side twenty years earlier, and with a cause attached. Parasuraman and Riley put the blame on alarms that cry wolf, and medicine then ran that experiment at scale: the record of it is at alarm fatigue, where the neglect is documented in deaths rather than in laboratory choices.
Abuse has no modern equivalent in common use, and this research reaches for it more often than for the other three. When a firm removes the junior tasks that were also the training, nobody has misused anything. The system was deployed without asking what the remaining job would consist of, which is the structure Lisa Bainbridge had set out in 1983 and which sits at the ironies of automation.
Why the fourth word is the one to keep#
Three of these terms describe something a person did at a screen. The fourth describes a decision taken in a meeting that person was not in. That asymmetry is the whole reason to carry the taxonomy: it gives a name to the failure that precedes the others and survives any amount of training aimed at the operator.
Parasuraman and Riley go further and say the causation runs that way, that abuse "can also promote misuse and disuse of automation by human operators". Read against current practice, that sentence anticipates the pattern where responsibility for an automated failure settles on whoever was nearest the screen, which is the argument at the moral crumple zone.
What was read, and what was not#
The four definitions above are quoted from the paper's abstract, which is published in full and was read at source on 17 September 2026 along with the complete reference list. The body of the paper sits behind a paywall and was not read. So this page carries the taxonomy and none of the argument or evidence inside it, and the accident cases the authors drew on are visible only as entries in their bibliography, among them the Warsaw A320 overrun of 1993, the Mont Sainte-Odile A320 crash of 1992 and the grounding of the Royal Majesty off Nantucket in 1995. What they concluded from those is not quoted here, because it has not been seen here.
The paper reports no new data. It reviews and organises a literature, so this research grades it as a compiled review and not as a measurement, and nobody should cite it for an effect size. Its value is that it makes four failures nameable and keeps one of them pointed at the organisation.
