How the seven SuperSkills produce judgement

The output of the other seven running together, rather than a capability of its own.

Last reviewed: 26 September 2026 · Next review due: 26 September 2027

The estate argues two things that have to be joined. That judgement is the scarce capability of this era, and that seven human skills are what matter. This page is the join: each of the seven supplies one component of a judgement, and the failure of any one of them shows up as a recognisable kind of bad decision.

Question this page answersAll 996 questions this research covers

Judgement is not an eighth skill. It is what the seven produce when they run together, and each one supplies a different component of a decision. Which means a bad decision can be read backwards to the capability that was missing.

The answer, in one line

No. It is what the seven produce when they run together. Each supplies a different component of a decision, and the absence of any one of them shows up as a recognisable failure: a decision made on the wrong question, at the wrong altitude, without the line drawn, or with the machine deciding.

The join this page makes#

Two arguments run through this research and they are usually made separately. That judgement is the scarce capability of this era, because AI has made production cheap and left the deciding behind. And that seven human capabilities are what matter. Stated apart they sound like two frameworks. They are one: the seven are the components, judgement is the output.

Hirji's own line for the leadership version of this is short. You do not need to be technical. You need to be able to judge.

What each one supplies#

Curiosity supplies the question. Every decision is an answer to something, and the question was usually chosen before anybody noticed choosing it. The Curiosity Loop is what surfaces the fracture the framing has covered over. The failure mode is a well-executed answer to the wrong question, which no amount of decision quality further down will rescue.

Change readiness supplies movement and the thing that does not move. Acting before certainty arrives, and having written down in advance what is protected when the system says otherwise. The anchor principle is the second half, and without it flexibility has no direction. The failure mode is either paralysis waiting for evidence that would not have changed the decision, or adaptation that keeps the form and loses the point.

Big picture thinking supplies the altitude. Which level the decision belongs at, chosen rather than inherited. The Altitude Lens is the mechanism. The failure mode is recognisable: a decision that solved this quarter cleanly and created three years of cost, or a strategy nobody can act on by Thursday.

Empathy supplies who is affected. Not as sentiment but as information the decision needs and does not otherwise contain. Listen, label, ladder ends in a question that converts it into a decision. The failure mode is a decision that is correct on every measure the organisation holds and lands badly on every person it touches.

Global adaptability supplies whether the reasoning travels. Whether what is obviously right here is right in another market, another culture, another regulatory regime. The context scan and the local mirrors are how that gets tested before rather than after. The failure mode is a decision that was sound in the room where it was made and meant something else where it arrived.

Principled innovation supplies the line. What will not be done, written before the pressure. The Principle Test is the question set and the Integrity Loop is the machinery. The failure mode is the decision that is defensible on every metric and that nobody will defend in their own name.

The Augmented Mindset decides what the machine does and what stays with you. The three terrains settle the ground, the use-or-keep test settles the task, and Hand, Head, Hours, Heart records what happened. The failure mode is the fluent decision nobody made, which is the one this era produces at scale.

Why the Augmented Mindset comes last#

Because it is the integration rather than an addition. Curiosity reframes the questions you put to a machine. Change readiness shortens the distance between insight and action. Big picture thinking holds the system-level trade-offs the tool cannot see. Empathy keeps accountability human. Global adaptability preserves meaning across contexts. Principled innovation draws the boundaries. The Augmented Mindset binds them and turns capability into judgement at speed.

It is also the one of the seven that shows up in a record rather than in an impression, which is what makes it the entry point for assessment and for the development programme at how you build judgement in an organisation.

Reading a bad decision backwards#

The practical use of the mapping is diagnostic. When something has gone wrong, the shape of the failure usually names the missing component, and the remedy differs in each case. A question failure is not fixed by better governance. An altitude failure is not fixed by more consultation. A decision nobody made is not fixed by adding a reviewer, which is the finding at human in the loop is not a safeguard.

It also sorts the three kinds of judgement at types of judgement. Curiosity and big picture thinking mostly serve the evaluative kind, deciding what matters. Principled innovation and empathy serve the moral kind. The Augmented Mindset governs how much of the predictive kind is handed over, which is the part machines have taken.

What this does not establish#

The mapping is an argument rather than a finding. Nobody has tested whether decisions fail in the way the seven components predict, and the failure modes are described from practice rather than counted. The seven capabilities are a considered selection rather than a measured taxonomy, which the page on the seventy subskills states plainly. What the mapping is good for is locating a problem and choosing a remedy, not scoring anybody.

Questions answered on this page

Is judgement an eighth SuperSkill?

No. It is what the seven produce when they run together. Each supplies a different component of a decision, and the absence of any one of them shows up as a recognisable failure: a decision made on the wrong question, at the wrong altitude, without the line drawn, or with the machine deciding.

Which skill matters most for judgement?

The Augmented Mindset, because it governs what the machine does and what stays with the person, and because it is the integration of the other six. That is why it comes last of the seven in the book rather than first.

What does each skill contribute?

Curiosity supplies the question and whether it was the right one. Change readiness supplies the willingness to act before certainty and the anchor that says what does not move. Big picture thinking supplies the altitude. Empathy supplies who is affected. Global adaptability supplies whether this reasoning holds in another context. Principled innovation supplies the line. The Augmented Mindset decides what is delegated and what is kept.

How do you tell which component failed?

By the shape of the bad decision. A well-executed answer to the wrong question is a curiosity failure. A decision that solved this quarter and created three years of cost is an altitude failure. A decision defensible on every measure that nobody will defend in their own name is a principle failure. A fluent decision nobody made is an Augmented Mindset failure.
